Dear Public Service Director,

September is National Recovery Month!

Substance use and mental health disorders are often linked to higher risk of suicide, which is a serious problem here in our own community: the Medical Examiner recently reported that San Diego County has a suicide rate of 13.1 percent – the highest it’s been since 1997 and well above the national rate. A total of 413 people in San Diego took their own lives last year. i It’s vitally important to let those who are struggling with mental illness or addictions know that help is available, and where they can find local treatment and recovery support resources. ii

To help address this issue, each September the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) sponsors Recovery Month. The goal of Recovery Month is to promote the message that, with the right help and support, people can – and do – recover from mental health and substance use disorders to live healthy, self-directed lives as members of their community.

Locally, San Diego County has partnered with Optum – the company that administers behavioral health services for Medicaid members in the County – to help more people access high-quality mental health and substance use disorder treatment programs so they can reach recovery.
